Designing for Hand and Wrist Anatomy
Published in Karen L. LaBat, Karen S. Ryan, Human Body, 2019
The thenar eminence at the base of the thumb is variably plump depending on the size of the muscles, and it is demarcated by the thenar crease. The hypothenar eminence is the mound of muscles on the opposite side of the palm. It is smaller and often does not have a clear line of demarcation. Note the mobility of the web of the thumb—the span of soft tissue between the thumb and the index finger—as you move your thumb toward your midpalm.

It is common practice to obtain two projections, a lateral and an antero-posterior.In the case of a suspected foreign body in the thenar eminence,a postero-anterior projection is used to maintain the relationship with the adjacent structures.
Imaging of the upper limb

o The flexor retinaculum attaches to the pisiform, hook of hamate, scaphoid bone and trapezium. The median nerve runs through the carpal tunnel. The median nerve supplies the thenar eminence. Patients with carpal tunnel syndrome present with tingling in the fingers of the median nerve distribution, i.e. thumb to radial side of ring finger.
Recurrent Neural Network to Forecast Sprint Performance

Omegawave technology allows comprehensive analysis of HRV and direct current biopotentials through a number of linear and nonlinear techniques. Student-athlete was issued an Omegawave heart rate strap which was adjusted according to his respective chest size. Upon moistening with tap water, student-athlete tied the heart rate strap around his torso at the level of his xiphoid process ensuring that the electrocardiogram pads were aligned with his midaxillary line. DC potential was noninvasively recorded by means of small portable DC-amplifiers connected to the frontal eminence of his scalp and thenar eminence of his right hand. To ensure reliable measurements, student-athlete performed assessments antemeridian (between the hours of 06:00 and 08:00) in a rested state while lying supine in a room with minimal light and distraction. Duration of assessments was 4 min in length to obtain time- and frequency-domain HRV indices and allow ample time for omegametry to stabilize. Table 1 provides a glossary of numerical HRV and omegametry parameters provided by Omegawave.
Development of a multifingered robotic hand with the thenar grasp function

The thumb is required to be precisely controlled for realizing all grasps by changing the opposed position. Therefore, we assign three actuators for the thumb to move all the joints independently, and the largest actuator is assigned to the proximal actuator for the CMC joint for the thenar grasp, as shown in Table 1. The output of the actuator is almost three times as large as the remaining actuators. Figure 7(a) shows the configuration of the gear train of the thumb joint excluding the first joint. One actuator is placed on the palm to drive the thenar eminence and the remaining two actuators are placed on the proximal link (thenar eminence) to transmit the power to the distal joints.
