Historical Perspective

Beech brought out the Travel Air, to be followed by the Baron, the Queen Air, and the King Air. Cessna put tricycle landing gear on its 170s and 180s in developing the 172 and 182 series, which became the best-selling airplanes in history. Piper discontinued the Tri-Pacer and entered the Cherokee, Comanche, and Twin Comanche into the market. Many of the old names, such as Bellanca, Mooney, Navion, and North American, would also enjoy a comeback.

Theory behind takeoff rotation is presented in Chapter 8, so it is not repeated here. For convenience, an aircraft with a tricycle landing gear is considered. Recall that the rotation is around the point of contact between the main gear and the ground. Figure 10.1 illustrates the forces during takeoff rotation.

Figure 1 presents a typical tailless delta wing, single engine, single seater, high performance aircraft which consist of four Elevons (symmetrically placed at Inboard and Outboard) at trailing edge as the primary control surface for lateral (Roll) and longitudinal (Pitch) control and with a Rudder hinged to single vertical tail for directional (Yaw) control. The aircraft has a tricycle landing gear arrangement with Main Landing Gear (MLG) (right and left side) symmetrically placed on center fuselage and Nose Landing Gear (NLG) located on forward fuselage.
Evaluation of the lateral loading caused by aircraft with complex gear configurations turning during taxiing

This algorithm is validated by the data of a simulation as no data of measurements are yet available (Aircraft operators are not willing to allow instrumentation on operational aircraft). Nie and Wei (2013) developed software to simulate the aircraft ground movement. The analysis object was a transport aircraft with tricycle landing gear, and the simulation results are shown in Figure 3. The vertical axis shows the lateral force in kN and the horizontal axis shows time in seconds during turning.
