Satellites
Published in Mohammad Razani, Information, Communication, and Space Technology, 2017
As mentioned earlier, the cost-effectiveness of small satellites makes them attractive to many organizations and countries. One major cost in any satellite system is the cost of launching satellites into different orbits. Although the small satellites are launched on the side of the large and traditional satellites, when such launches takes place, because the CubeSats are considered as secondary payloads, the advantage of the low cost of the launch leads the universities to be more involved in space activities. Table 4.9 lists some of the available launch access options.27 CubeSats have developed into many application areas and in different disciplines, as they become more attractive for some countries as the only route to get into space activities, Table 4.10 shows samples of such applications by universities and organizations.27
Unusual problems

Small satellites can carry out most of the applications available through their larger cousins. The cheapness of the smaller satellites makes them suitable for many scientific experiments of limited purpose and duration. A good many small satellites have already been deployed and are used for weather-watching, ocean monitoring, detecting land cover and vegetation growth, and other remote sensing purposes.84

In one configuration, a series of small satellites are launched and placed in low Earth orbits (LEOs).20 This constellation of satellites can provide global coverage while their low altitudes support portable transmitters and receivers on Earth. Applications include data/voice communication over small terminals and service for regions that are not covered by terrestrial communications networks.21

Over conventional satellite, different benefits to include small satellites are the lower cost of manufacture, easiness of mass production, lower cost of launch, ability to be launched in groups, and the faster building time.
