Investigations of planetary atmospheres and ionospheres by the radio occultation technique

The Earth�s atmosphere and ionosphere can be efficiently studied by the radio occultation technique employing two satellites, one of which emits radio signals and the other receives them. The first large-scale studies of the Earth�s atmosphere and ionosphere with the Mir orbital station and a geostationary satellite already demonstrated the potential of the multi-satellite radio occultation method for the global monitoring of the Earth�s atmosphere and ionosphere. Such a monitoring was later accomplished using the Microlab satellite that received signals from the multi-satellite navigation system, GPS. The radio occultation monitoring of the Earth�s atmosphere and ionosphere is still at a stage of refinement, since considerable research efforts are required to demonstrate its advantages over the conventional methods of acquisition of meteorological data.

Along with satellite radio tomography, the radio occultation measurement method is applied to the ionospheric diagnostics. The measurements imply that a high earth orbit satellite-source emits a signal that sounds the ionosphere, while the second, low earth orbit satellite, going out of the shadow zone serves as a receiver. Radio occultation measurements determine the pressure, temperature of the troposphere, and the electron density of the ionosphere [4–7].
