Space exploration was one of the earliest applications of Shannon’s new theory of communication using bits in place of analog signals. His exciting new theories motivated invention and innovation, and the space program kicked off a revolution in how we communicate by bringing together extremely bright and talented scientists and engineers in one place at one time working on the same problems. It started with unmanned probes, and the most ambitious probes of them all: Voyager I and II. Follow-on transfer of technology from the Voyager project and its descendants created the robust communications infrastructure we enjoy, today. A handful of pioneers and a daring space program accelerated development of the signal so that connecting smart phones to the Internet is a common everyday experience. Thus, Voyager I not only began a long journey into outer space—it also began a long technological journey into our everyday lives.

There are three main types of probes: standard, microtip, and dual/multiple probes. They are autoclavable and accept various tips. Standard probes have large tip diameters that are able to process large volumes at low intensity.[31,46] Microtip probes process small volumes and because of the small tip they can supply high intensity (power/unit area). Dual/multiple probes (Figure 4) allow a single unit to process simultaneously two or more samples at the same sonication intensity, thus providing higher throughput.[47]
