Despite the recent dissemination of the FELA method that directly analyses the failure state of structural systems, it is still necessary to find extensive applications in engineering fields. Engineers do not enforce new analytical methods with limited applications instead of well-established iterative methods such as nonlinear FE analysis. While the FELA is developed through continuous mechanical problems, a more straightforward discontinuous solution can be considered as an alternative (Alwis, 2000). Smith and Gilbert have recently proposed a novel computational limit analysis method to overcome existing limitations (Smith and Gilbert 2007a, 2007b). With this new method, called “Discontinuity Layout Optimization” (DLO), the problem is formulated in terms of discontinuity lines instead of the solid elements. It directly produces the upper bound mechanisms (Gilbert et al. 2010).
