Subscription pricing

Taylor & Francis publish articles through two main routes: either via pay-to-read subscription access or pay-to-publish Open Access, where authors (or their funders) pay an Article Publishing Charge (APC) to make the work freely available to all readers. For more details on how our APCs are set, please see our position on Open Access pricing.

How We Set Subscription Prices

Our subscription pricing is not one-size-fits-all. Instead, prices are tailored based on the subject area and the specific characteristics of each journal. Different portfolios and journals may adjust at different rates, and we review pricing at least once a year.

Changes in list prices are influenced by several key factors, including but not limited to:

  • Quality indicators: Metrics such as a journal’s Impact Factor quartile or CiteScore quartile, help us assess its standing within the academic community.
  • Usage data: We consider how often content is accessed and downloaded, as well as usage trends over time.
  • Publishing partnerships: Some journals are published on behalf of scholarly societies or associations, which may come with specific pricing arrangements.
  • Articles in a volume: the number of articles published in a volume year can impact costs.
  • Market indicators: We strive to offer pricing which is value-driven and competitive in today’s market

It is important to note that many institutions do not pay the full list price. Pricing is often shaped by multi-year agreements that include negotiated discounts, annual price caps or increases, or bundled packages. In some cases, individuals receive reduced pricing through society memberships or personal subscriptions.

We are also committed to expanding global access to research. We participate in programmes such as EIFL and Research4Life, which provide free or low-cost access in eligible countries. We have also recently re-launched our Special Terms for Authors and Researchers (STAR) programme, which offers additional support for those who need it.

What Do Subscription Fees Cover?

When you subscribe to our journals, you are supporting much more than just access to articles. These fees help us deliver reliable, high-quality research and ensure the publishing process runs smoothly for authors, reviewers, and readers alike.

Your support helps fund:

  • Validation: Ensuring Quality and Trust
We support authors before submission with training and tools, and once a manuscript is submitted, we coordinate every step of the peer review process. This includes running secure editorial systems, coordinating expert reviewers, providing ethics checks, and supporting reviewers with training and recognition.
  • Preservation: Maintaining the Scholarly Record
Preserving the scholarly record over time is an essential responsibility of publishers. Subscription revenues fund secure digital archiving, version control, and compliance with long-term preservation standards through services like CLOCKSS and Portico. This ensures that knowledge remains accessible for future generations, regardless of technological change or publisher turnover.
  • Amplification: Helping Research Reach the World
Publishing is not the end of the process. We also promote articles through marketing, media outreach, and discoverability services. We archive all content, manage updates or retractions when needed, and help authors understand how their work is being used through metrics and reporting tools.
  • Collaboration: Connecting People and Ideas
We help researchers, societies, and institutions collaborate and share knowledge — from supporting editorial boards and conference proceedings to helping foster global debates and the evolution of ideas in every subject area.
  • Innovation: Improving the Publishing Experience
We are always testing new approaches, such as open access models like Subscribe to Open and Collective Pathway to Open Publishing. We also invest in ongoing editorial development to ensure our journals meet the evolving needs of researchers and readers worldwide.

Supporting Integrity and Future Technologies: investing in critical areas for sustainable scholarly research

Your subscription also enables investment in essential areas that keep the scholarly record safe and trusted:

  • Research Integrity
We have quadrupled the size of our Research Integrity team since 2019. By combining expert human oversight with new technologies, we work hard to ensure that the content we publish is accurate, ethical, and trustworthy.
  • Technology to Support Authors and Institutions
We are building tools that improve experiences for authors and librarians, such as:
    • T&F Journal Suggester: Uses AI to help authors find the best journal for their research and streamline the submission process.
    • Author Dashboard: Lets authors track their manuscript from submission to publication, offering transparency at every stage.
    • Librarian Research Dashboard: Supports librarians with managing Open Access agreements and improving workflows for institutions and their researchers.
    • Trust and Quality Assurance: We invest in systems that screen submissions for signs of fraud, such as manipulated images or paper mills. These tools — paired with expert review — help maintain the credibility of the research we publish.

Together, our services ensure that every article we publish is accurate, discoverable, and meaningful — not just today, but for years to come. Subscription fees make it possible for us to support authors at every stage, uphold the highest standards of research integrity, and continuously improve the publishing experience.
