We don”t know directly, but if it were entering the SR we would not expect it to report “reasonable” levels of calcium. The best way to determine that would be with electron microprobe analysis to look at the subcellular distribution of fluorine atoms, but we have not done that yet. Compartmentalization in general is a buggerboo of all calcium indicators. It is something that needs to be controlled for and which has not been done yet for this indicator. It is an important point.
Orally Induced Tolerance to Nickel: The Role of Oral Exposure (Orthodontic Devices) in Preventing Sensitization

Edie et al. (1981) compared the corrosion effect occurring under clinical conditions on examples of Nitinol™ wire with that on stainless steel wire by electron microprobe. Formation of a passive oxide layer in the aqueous environment appears to equally prevent corrosion on either materials.

The composition of volcanic cristobalite crystals was quantified by electron microprobe and differences in composition assessed by Welch's two-sample t-test. Sections of dome-rock and ash particles were imaged by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and elemental compositions of rims determined by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy.

The addition of bioactive components is another important way to improve the biological properties of implants [5,17]. For example, adding biologically active elements such as Ca, P, Si and Sr by using MAO technology can significantly improve the morphology and biological properties of the titanium surface coating [8,27–29]. Silicon is an essential trace element in the human body and is widely distributed in all human tissues and organs [30]. Electron microprobe analysis showed that silicon was mainly concentrated in the areas of growth in developing bone and had the highest activity in osteoblasts and it has been proven that silicon is effective in promoting the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts [31]. In recent years, some silicon-containing materials have been widely used in the clinical research of implant materials because they can compensate for the inadequacy of the surface bioactivity of metal implants [32,33]. It has been found that materials with ion precipitates, such as silicon ions, can promote the expression of osteogenesis-related genes (BMP2, ALP, Runx2, etc.) and thus promote the proliferation, differentiation and mineralization of osteoblasts [34]. Therefore, the incorporation of silicon into the surface of titanium is an effective way to improve the bioactivity of the material surface and promote good osseointegration.

The surface morphology of the Nano chitosan with and without DEX was examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) using JEOL JXA 840A electron microprobe analyzer [JOEL USA Inc, Peabody, MA, National Research Center (QUANTA FEG250)] on aluminum stubs and coated with a thin layer of palladium-gold alloy.
