In another study, 35 indigenous medicinal plants were identified in Urmia, Iran that were effective against infectious diseases of urinary, reproductive, digestive, respiratory tracts and the skin. Those plant species belonged to 17 plant families and the Lamiaceae had the highest frequency of plants for the treatment of infectious diseases. Althaea hirsuta, Mentha longifolia were some examples of plant species that had been used against pulmonary infections. Alhagi camelorum and Glycyrrhiza glabra were commonly used against intestinal infections while Dipsacus laciniatus and Equisetum arvense were used against urinary tract infections. Lamium album was employed as a remedy for both urinary tract infections and vaginitis. Some examples of plants that have been used against skin infections included Sanguisorba minor, Verbascum agrimonifolium and Ixiolirion tataricum. Plant leaves were the most widely used part in preparation of herbal remedies and most of the medicinal herbs were prescribed in the boiled forms (Bahmani et al. 2015).

Various species of Verbascum (V. mucronatum, V. latisepalum, V. salviifolium, V. lasianthum, and V. pterocalycinum) have their ethnotraditional significance in Turkish medicine for managing type-II hemorrhoids. These Mullein leaf extracts are native to Europe and cultivated in temperate areas of the world, including Hawaii, North America, New Zealand, and Australia. The aqueous extract of V. mucronatum flower demonstrates potent anti-inflammatory, anti-nociceptive, and wound healing activities. Fractionation of this herbal tonics leads to isolation of different iridoid glycosides of which verbascoside, aucubin, and ilwensisaponin A are responsible for the pharmacological activities by reducing the dilation of veins.

Verbascum thapsus belongs to family Scorphulariaceae and it’s native to America, Australia, Africa and in many Asian and European countries (Figure 7.12). It has anti-bacterial (Prakash et al. 2016), anti-inflammatory (Dar et al. 2019) and skin healing properties (Jafarirad et al. 2019), which have already been studied and in traditional medicines, its extract is used for the treatment of diarrhea and for genitals as well as urinary organs infection by quacks. V. thapsus extracts’ various concentrations are tested on the T. vaginalis trophozoites. Ethanolic extracts of this plant induce apoptosis in T. vaginalis, which is determined by Flow cytometry. Its ethanolic extracts give inhibitory concentration 50% (IC50) of 39.17 μg/ml after 24 hours, while IC50 value of metronidazole is 0.0326 μg/ml. However, metronidazole induces carcinogenic effects, drug resistance in parasites and teratogenic effects on the fetus. Ethanolic extracts of V. thapsus induce programmed cell death (apoptosis) in T. vaginalis (Zohreh et al. 2015).

The genus Verbascum is one of the largest genera of the Scrophulariaceae family, comprising about 360 species of flowering plants. Traditionally Verbascum spp. was used to treat inflammatory disease, asthma, spasmodic cough and migraine (Zhao et al. 2011). It also has been used in folk medicine for coughs as infusions (Dimitrova et al. 2013). Verbascum species contain different classes of biologically active compounds such as flavonoids, phenyl ethanoids, saponins, sterols and iridoid glycosides (Akdemir et al. 2003). Verbascum nubicum Murb. is a biennial herbaceous species indigenous to Sinai region of Egypt and Al-Taif governorate of Saudi Arabia. Nothing was reported in the available literature concerning this species; either the active constituents or the biological activities; therefore, it seems worthwhile to explore this plant.

The plants from the genus Verbascum are rich in flavonoids, iroides, saponins, and polysaccharides (Klimek 1996, Kanzaki et al.1998). The mullein plant species contain ingredients such as iroides, Phenylethanoid Glycosides, monoterpene glycosides, neolignan glycosides, flavonoids, steroids, spermine alkaloids, phenolic acids, and fatty acids (Tatli and Akdemir 2004). In other studies, the existence of various phytochemical ingredients such as mucilage, carotenoides (Sotoodeh et al.2016) as well as iroide glycosides, phenyl etanoid (Armatu et al.2011), and ascorbic acid terpenoids (Riaz et al.2013) have been reported. Table 5 summarizes secondary metabolites in some species.
