Unbiased research
Published in C. P. Khare, Evidence-based Ayurveda, 2019
Benincasa hispida (Thunb.) Cogn. is employed as a main ingredient in Kushmanda lehyam in Ayurvedic system of medicine. The lehyam is used as a rejuvenative agent and in nervous disorders. This study was planned to investigate the methanol extract of Benincasa hispida (MEBH) fruit for possible antihistaminic or anticholinergic activity.
Inhibiting Low-Density Lipoproteins Intimal Deposition and Preserving Nitric Oxide Function in the Vascular System
Published in Christophe Wiart, Medicinal Plants in Asia for Metabolic Syndrome, 2017
Vascular endothelium reacts to vascular lesions induced by high-plasma glucose and low-density lipoprotein by expressing macrophage chemoattractant protein-1 and interleukin-8, which participate in the development of atherosclerosis.35 Macrophage chemoattractant protein-1 is responsible for monocyte infiltration, and interleukin-8 is a chemotactic for neutrophils.130 Aqueous extract of Benincasa hispida (Thunb.) Cogn. given prophylactically at a concentration of 20 μg/mL inhibited the surface expression of intercellular-adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular adhesion molecule-1, and E-selectin by human umbilical vein endothelial cells challenged with glucose.131 Hyperglycemia triggers the generation of reactive oxygen species in various cell types, which leads to nuclear factor-κB activation and atherogenesis.130 Aqueous extract of Benincasa hispida(Thunb.) Cogn. at 20 μg/mL inhibited in human umbilical vein endothelial cells translocation of nuclear factor-κB, prevented the phosphorylation of IκBα, and inhibited the expression of macrophage chemoattractant protein-8 and interleukin-8.131

Oral administration is the most widely used route and most readily accepted form for the patients (Gaba et al., 2015). Unfortunately, none of the commercial AmB formulations is produced by now. It is difficult in reaching efficacious bioavailability when orally administered. In recent years, various nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems, such as solid lipid nanoparticles (Chaudhari et al., 2016), lipid conjugates (Faustino and Pinheiro, 2020), micelles (Risovic et al., 2003), emulsions (Wasan et al., 2009), self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (Gershkovich et al., 2010), cubosomes (Yang et al., 2014), polymer lipid hybrid nanoparticles (Jain et al., 2012), PLGA nanoparticles (Italia et al., 2009), polymeric nanoparticles (Verma et al., 2011), carbon nanotubes (Benincasa et al., 2011), and lipid–polymer hybrid nanoparticles (Faustino and Pinheiro, 2020), have been investigated for enhancing AmB bioavailability. They all have in common to overcome the shortcoming of parenteral administration, greatly to decrease its toxicity, and improve its efficacy. Of note, almost all of oral AmB formulation only stay in the stage of animal experiment research, lack of further clinical study (Chaudhari et al., 2016; Faustino and Pinheiro, 2020; Risovic et al., 2003; Wasan et al., 2009; Gershkovich et al., 2010; Yang et al., 2014; Jain et al., 2012; Italia et al., 2009; Verma et al., 2011; Benincasa et al., 2011).

This telehealth group manual was a clinical innovation developed in crisis early in the pandemic when it was clear that traditional mental health practice required rapid change to address the older adult community’s mental health needs. As the pandemic continues to unfold, pursuing novel approaches for addressing social isolation in older adults remains critical. Several recent studies suggest the decrease of social interaction in light of public health restrictions negatively impacts quality of life and healthcare provision (Moreno et al., 2020; Nguyen et al., 2020). Moreover, emergent literature indicates a risk of speeded disease progression among older adults with chronic and co-occurring diseases, including but not limited to cardiovascular, hepatic, renal, and neurological illnesses (Ferini-Strambi & Salsone, 2021; Napoli, Tritto, Benincasa, Mansueto, & Ambrosio, 2020; Neumann-Podczaska et al., 2020; Shahid et al., 2020). Recent articles have also begun to highlight increasing reports of stress, anxiety, and depression among older adults as the pandemic continues (Baker & Clark, 2020). Aging Veterans present a unique subset of individuals who are particularly vulnerable to social isolation, worry, and other disruptions in mood and anxiety. Supporting social connectedness is an important suicide prevention strategy and this is salient with Veterans as part of VA’s broader mission for reducing Veteran suicide (Carroll, Kearney, & Miller, 2020; Van Orden et al., 2020). While the manual’s impact on Veteran care is not yet known, we are hopeful that positive implications will be observed across mental health, physical illnesses, and overall quality of life.

The XRD results are presented in Figure 4. The pattern of XRD spectrum exhibits 4 peaks which correspond to (111), (200), (220) and (311) planes on the basis of the faced-centered cubic (FCC) structure of AuNPs with its diffraction peaks at 2θ degree =38.14°, 44.31°, 64.71° and 77.70°, respectively. The crystalline nature of AuNPs was confirmed by XRD analysis. A similar pattern of peaks was reported for AuNPs synthesized by using different plants such as Rhus chinensis, Benincasa hispida and Hibiscus sabdariffa [12,25,26]; this indicates that the above findings are in good agreement with previous studies.
