Dummies, mockups and prototypes are different model concepts that can be linked to different stages of a development process, either digitally or physically. The terms are often interchangeable, and many use ‘prototype’ as a collective term. In general, one can say that a dummy is made early in the sketching process with whatever you have at hand. It is often created to explore different sketches, themes or concepts in the ideas phase, especially in terms of form and materiality. A dummy can also be more complex, such as a handmade copy of a finished hardbound book or magazine, with the correct paper, format, and weight, with or without text and images. A mockup is a term for a model of a full-size design, e.g. product or packaging, used by designers mainly for testing and obtaining feedback from users. At the same time, we can say that a mockup is a prototype if it provides at least one part of the functionality of a system and makes it possible to test the design (Vieru, 2009). The term prototype3 is originally used for an early sample or model of a product built to test and evaluate a concept or a new design to enhance precision. Prototype is also referred to as a model that closely resembles the final result, e.g. a preliminary version of the product in order to demonstrate and test its function and design before the product is produced.

In building physical prototypes, the new rapid prototyping (RP) technologies can be extremely helpful. These are methods for creating complex parts (typically made from polymers) by downloading their CAD representations to an RP machine. This allows designers, manufacturing personnel, suppliers, and even customers to look at the parts and evaluate them. Even though the parts are typically not made from the final material, they can still be evaluated for a number of factors, such as assembly fit, aesthetics, basic correctness, and ease of manufacture. While in the past it might have taken days or even weeks to have a prototype made, now it is only a matter of hours. This can greatly speed up portions of the design-build-test cycle. Also, you can build prototypes with varying amount of functionality, and the type of prototype built should be consistent with the objectives of the current test phase.

The definition of requirements and specifications and the design and testing of the system usually happen iteratively, particularly when the project end-item is complex. The requirements cannot be completely defined without some amount of prior design work, and the design work cannot be completed without some amount of prior fabrication and testing. The overall process generally cascades down as illustrated in Figure 4.7, with occasional loops back and repeated steps. Work that flows from stage to stage like this is called the waterfall process. To assess and modify specifications, often a prototype is used. A prototype is an early running model of a system or component built for purposes of demonstrating performance, functionality, or proving feasibility. It is built according to initial specifications and then tested; if, based upon tests, the specifications are changed, then the prototype is modified and tested again. This process ensures that the basic system design supports the system specifications.

The suggested technique MVO and SSO have been tested experimentally, and their effectiveness has been evaluated to that of the GW. The suggested control approach is developed using an instructional network on the DSP TMS320F28335 chip. Figure 15 depicts the prototype model. The motor’s terminal values and phases current flow are detected and regulated as needed by the microprocessor. Because the BLDC motor’s equivalent resistance is inaccessible, the phase values were measured via a simulated resistance circuit. The microprocessor requires that the differentially terminated halls and actuator outputs from the motors output connection be transformed to one terminated utilizing MAX485. The encoding output is analyzed by the processor’s capturing module in order to determine the velocity. In experimental studies, the area detection for various dynamic load processes is validated. The overall cost of the proposed prototype is Rs. 95,000.00/- excluding laboratory measuring elements. The overall cost of the proposed prototype is Rs. 1,50,000.00/- including laboratory measuring elements.

A prototype is a sample product that demonstrates the specified design and final fabrication method; the construction should conform to specifications intended for the final product (Fasanella, 2011). Prototype development in clothing design has been broadly used and conducted by many researchers to support the needs of the intended users (Branson, Dejonge, & Munson, 1986; Bye & Hakala, 2005; Ho & Au, 2016; Krenzer, Starr, & Branson, 2005; Morris, Park, & Sarkar, 2017; Tan, Crown, & Capjack, 1998; Walde-Armstrong, Branson, & Fair, 1996). Branson et al. (1986) investigated the thermal responses associated with prototype pesticide-protective clothing. Bye and Hakala (2004) developed a prototype of sailing apparel for women. Ho and Au (2016) focused on the development of functional racing singlet for professional rowers. Krenzer et al. (2005) created a prototype sports bra for particularly larger busted women to mitigate breast discomfort during exercise. Morris et al. (2017) researched design requirements for physically active breastfeeding women to create a sports bra design that improved the health of both mother and child. Tan et al. (1998) designed and evaluated aviator’s flight suits to provide optimum thermal protection for a flight personnel by determining the effect of selected garment parameters such as style, fit, closure, system and seam type. Walde-Armstrong, Branson, and Fair (1996) studied a development and evaluation of a prototype athletic girdle to protect the groin, hamstring and quadriceps muscle groups, to keep muscle warm and to flight muscle fatigue.
