Engine performance is given by the use of standard terms that define the extent of load to be applied. Typical engine ratings are defined by EGSA 101P-1988 “Engine Driven Generator Sets Performance Standard.” Industrial or continuous rating is the maximum power that a generator set driven engine can deliver 24 hours a day, when the unit is used as a utility-type power plant, but where it serves a constant load.Prime power rating is the maximum peak load the generator can meet when used as a utility-type power plant under normal varying load factors. This rating incorporates a minimum overload capability of 10%.Emergency standby ratings are the maximum rating for the duration of any outage (definitions of length vary). No overload capacity is specified at this rating.

In live event, motion picture, and television production, we often use generators as the primary source of power, not as a backup. The prime power rating of a generator is based on the assumption it will be running for long periods of time and that the load will vary from 50% to 100% of the generator rating. It can run loaded up to about 110% of the prime power rating, but not for more than one hour in every 12-hour period.
