Approval voting is a voting system where voters are allowed to vote for multiple candidates by indicating their approval, and the candidate with the highest number of approvals is declared the winner. For example, if each candidate is conceived of as a potential contract, and each voter marks each contract she is willing to consent to, then the contract that the greatest number of voters consents to is implemented by approval voting. Because approval voting can maximise the number of consenting voters, it maximises the number of voters who are self-determined. If a candidate that did not maximise the number of consents is elected (i.e. an approval voting winner is not elected), then the number of voters subjected to a winning candidate that they did not consent to is increased. Very importantly, approval voting is transitive when there are multiple candidates, so the intransitivity problems which arise, when majority preference is generalised to multiple candidates, do not occur.
