In this category, one can include mostly the Android and Raspberry PI equipped devices which can execute complex Java-based agents (JADE/WADE). However, this expands to the more generic definition of a shop floor device capable of executing code complex enough to model an intelligent behaviour. This class of devices are the building blocks for a genuine DI architecture, in which complex negotiation logic can be implemented at lower levels in the stack, allowing local decisions in the manufacturing process as demonstrated in previous work by Jun et al. (2009), Leitão (2009) and Ventä (2007). These devices can leverage higher layer standards on top of SOAP like ebXML, STEP or OAG BOD.
