Embedded Software Modeling and Design
Published in Louis Scheffer, Luciano Lavagno, Grant Martin, EDA for IC System Design, Verification, and Testing, 2018
The Specification and Description Language (SDL) has a more formal background since it was developed in the context of software for telecommunication systems, for the purpose of easing the implementation of verifiable communication protocols. An SDL design consists of blocks cooperating by means of asynchronous signals. The behavior of each block is represented by one or more (conceptually concurrent) processes. Each process in turn implements an extended FSM.
Modeling and Simulation Concepts
Published in Gabriel A. Wainer, Discrete-Event Modeling and Simulation, 2017
Specification and Description Language (SDL) was created to specify in a nonambiguous way the behavior of real-time applications. It was originally focused on communication systems, by providing a graphical and textual representation with equivalent semantics. A system is defined as a set of extended FSMs that can be interconnected [34].

The use of formal languages, such as Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) (Zeigler, Praehofer, and Kim 2000), Specification and Description Language (SDL) (ITU-T 2012) or Petri net (Recalde, Teruel, and Silva 1999), is without a doubt one of the best solution for easily integrating and communicating ideas about a model with the other members of the team, improving interoperability with other models (co-simulation) and promoting cooperation. An example of recent work which explores the use of official languages in this area is Sayed Ahmed, Wainer, and Mahmoud (2010) or Trčka, Hensen, and Wetter (2010), which explores the use of the co-simulation approach for calculating building HVAC systems (heating, ventilation and air conditioning).
