The software-defined data center (SDDC) concept extends the virtualization concepts to all data center resources. In an SDDC, all functional components of data center, i.e. internetworking, storage, security, and traffic management, are virtualized. According to IT experts, SDDCs will witness a strong market demand in near future [23]. SDDC concept actually comprises a variety of data center concepts that provide, operate and administer data operations using an application program interface (API). The biggest advantage of SDDCs is that cloud service providers need no longer to depend on specialized hardware equipment. All the applications in an SDDC are deployed and run through “logical applications”. A large number of vendors, such as VMware, NEC, Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, Juniper, and Hewlett-Packard, are working to develop and establish SDDC approaches. The most commonly cited advantage of SDDCs is the improved efficiency brought about by extending virtualization features throughout the data center, resulting in better administration of network and policy-based services. Several efforts are underway to make the standardization process uniform and to bring it in line with industry standards.

Mobile edge computing (MEC) [6] is edge computing that supports mobile devices using data repositories positioned close to the wireless infrastructure to keep the latency low. As mobile bandwidth increases and demands for data increase, the existing edge infrastructure is expected to change dramatically to support newer devices and applications in industrial, healthcare, manufacturing and other domains. As things at the edge grow more intelligent, we will see changes not only to the wireless infrastructure but to every aspect of the edge network. The compute servers, storage servers and network equipment will all go through some form of virtualization to create a more flexible and streamlined software-defined data center (SDDC) and will use a software-defined wide-area network (SD-WAN) for communication or network function virtualization (NFV) for network functions. Furthermore, private or hybrid cloud services will present a seamless experience, app-enabled frameworks will integrate well with all the data from the edge, and security paradigms will evolve to better address security and privacy concerns in a distributed environment.

This manuscript presents a use case of a private cloud-based platform with a faculty self-service option via web-based software-defined data center (SDDC) with catalogs of hands-on laboratories based on Microsoft’s SQL Server. The use case methodology is appropriate for proposing computing applications and is a natural approach to express functional requirements of a system,12 as well as software development.3 Use cases are also commonly used in describing educational applications of technology.4–8
