To get around this, more efficient ways have been developed to serve dynamic pages. One example is based upon Java. Small programs written in Java are called servlets, and represent the server-side equivalent of client applets. The servlets replace the CGI programs. The servlets run on a JavaVM and, after the first execution, they are cached. Java server pages provide a simple way to create XML tags and scriptlets that are then compiled into Java servlets. Typical applications are to generate a structured query language (SQL) statement from user-input criteria, and then to retrieve and display information from a database formatted for a web page. Java is platform independent, so can run on the same operating system as that chosen for the web server.

The back-end is implemented using Java and its Servlet Specification 3.1.0. Servlets are Java classes used to dynamically or statically generate a web-application's content. They support the request/response workflow within a web-application's environment and are part of the Java SE Development Kit (Oracle 2020).
