In view of the numerical loops described, while the co-current model can be solved directly in a spreadsheet manner by the “dragging” solution, propagating it forward in time or chamber space, iterations are required for the counter-current framework. From the authors’ experience, when implementing different numerical schemes in Microsoft Excel-based spreadsheets with the aim of developing a quick and easy predictive tool, the speed and the numerical stability of different iterative loops will need to be considered (Razmi et al., 2019). Drawing inspiration from the co-current approach, one may use the built-in automated iterative circular looping feature in Microsoft Excel to develop a “dragging” marching forward method for the computation (Figure 4.2.2). While this approach does not require coding nor implementation of any macros for iteration, due to the fine step size and the high total number of discretized steps this approach is highly unstable. With very large datasets (a high total number of discretized steps), the built-in circular looping feature also takes a very long time to compute. A more stable approach is to use the numerical scheme shown in (Figure 4.2.3). This is similar to typical Eulerian–Lagrangian iterative schemes in CFD simulations. Implementing this in the Microsoft Excel framework will require the use of macros and Visual Basic capabilities.
