MS-DOS for IBM PCs
Published in Paul W. Ross, The Handbook of Software for Engineers and Scientists, 2018
The TYPE command displays the contents of the specified file on the screen. This is the command to use when you simply need to look and see what a file contains. The command format is as follows: TYPE [d:][subdirectory]filename[.ext] If the drive and subdirectory are not specified, the default drive and subdirectory are assumed. The file name may not contain the global filename characters * or ?, because only one file can be displayed at a time.

Many formats for data are essentially equivalent to data tables. When you come across data in a format that you don’t recognize, it is worth checking whether it is one of the data-table friendly formats. Sometimes the filename extension provides an indication. Here are several, each with a brief description:

One of the problems which affect automation of designing process is the gap between the scanning system and the pattern-making system. The gathered measurements of human body are saved in a file isolated from the CAD/CAM systems. They can be viewed in the scanner software, processed by MS Excel and other software, which allow us to view files with filename extension *.ascii.csv. Data processing is a lengthy, monotonous routine job demanding high precision, attention and accuracy by the specialist. For this research, from more than 140 data, 23 of the data necessary for designing are to be selected. Automation of such work would allow us to design immediately after the gathering of anthropometric data. In order to automatise the data-extraction process, a scheme has been elaborated according to the process diagram (Figure 3(a)). The program reads initial (scanned) data file strings, and then divide them into elements in accordance with conditional separator (all data in the file measures.ascii.csv are separated with a coma). After that data are saved in the system in accordance with the data of measurement charts of the CAD system (file extension *.mas).
Thermal Decomposition Mechanism of Nitroglycerin by ReaxFF Reactive Molecular Dynamics Simulations

A self-written perl (filename extension) script is applied to analyze the trajectory files obtained during the ReaxFF simulations. After reading in the trajectory files, the chemical bonds are calculated and the molecules are assigned for each frame structure. In each frame, the output molecules are written in a mol (filename extension) format file one by one and InChI (The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) gives the unique identification code for the chemical structure of each compound) (Heller et al. 2013) analysis is performed using Openbabel (The Open Source Chemistry Toolbox) (O’Boyle et al. 2011) to determine the unique identifier of the molecule. According to InChI markers, the number, species and structure of molecules are counted and output.
