Electronic trading—Trading systems that either electronically match buyers with sellers or facilitate direct negotiation for legally binding transactions. The market center serves as the location where natural gas is transferred from buyer to seller. Customers may connect with the hub electronically to enter gas nominations, examine their account position or complete a sale or purchase.

Chapter 7 covered financial engineering in which we focused on selecting a portfolio of investments for a given objective. Investment securities such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds held in such portfolios are bought and sold predominantly over a network of computer systems and is called electronic trading. Electronic trading involves several entities that constitute the securities industry as shown in Figure 11.6.

The risk of cyber-attacks and insider threats is also increased as the global trade is becoming more reliant on IT and electronic trading platforms and documents (World Trade Organization 2018a). In 2013, the Belgian port of Antwerp reported that crime syndicates had used sustained cyber-attacks for drug trafficking, while these attacks had been ongoing for more than two years undetected. The penetration allowed the traffickers to remotely access the terminal systems, and then to release containers to their own truckers. The access to port systems was used to delete information and created many ‘ghost containers’ (Seatrade Maritime News 2013).
