I recently learned that our 2016 application to Clarivate Analytics Web of Science for an impact factor got stuck in the system and wasn’t evaluated. The process for impact factor evaluations has changed since our application was submitted. Journals are now strongly encouraged to apply to the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) first. The selection process for ESCI is the first step in applying to the Science Citation Index. All journals submitted for evaluation to the core Web of Science databases will initially be evaluated for the ESCI, and if successful, indexed in the ESCI while undergoing the more in-depth editorial review. It is my understanding that it is easier to get indexed in ESCI and once indexed there, a journal is automatically considered for an impact factor during review times. Taylor & Francis is helping us prepare an application to submit to ESCI as well as to SCOPUS, an abstract and citation database. As before, we shouldn’t expect an answer for at least 12 months.

A second notable change has to do with indexing. Currently, the journal is included in all of the major indexing services: EBSCO, Medline (PubMed), Scopus, and Web of Science, Scopus, and. This is in additional to Google Scholar, which is virtually automatic for all journals from reputable publishers. For the Web of Science, the journal is indexed in their Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI). Being part of these indexing services is very important for the authors of paper, since it means that their work will be much more easily found by others doing searches.
