In most of estuaries, the timing of the maximum currents, and high tide and low tide are offset but the lag between rarely results in standing waves. For example, the tidal fluctuations in New York Harbor are illustrated by Figure 8 are typical. The current usually increases during flood tide and then decreases until slack water occurs about an hour after high tide. Then the current ebbs as the tide falls and the current again reaches a maximum. Approximately two hours after low tide, it is again slack tide, with generally a high and low slack tide each tidal cycle.

Immediate demand was completed by using a dosing experiment in which receiving water was dosed with three concentrations of chlorine at different slack tide stages and the resulting concentration was measured after 10 sec. The difference between the dose (as determined by measurement in the control blank) and the resulting chlorine concentration was calculated as the “immediate demand.” An exponential fit was determined for the data.
