One of the steps in the brewing process is filtration of beer through polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP) resin in order to stabilize the products by removing a substantial portion of the haze active and non-haze active polyphenols. These phenolic compounds can subsequently be recovered from the alkaline residual stream generated after cleaning the PVPP, by extraction with solvents (solid-phase extraction, SPE) or supercritical fluid extraction (SFE). The obtained extracts can be used as natural antioxidants for use in the pharmaceutical industry (Barbosa-Pereira et al. 2013).

Total phenolic content (TPC) was estimated using Folin-Ciocalteu colorimetric method (Dewanto et al. 2002). Results were expressed as milligrams of gallic acid equivalents per gram of dry extract (mg GAE/g DE). To determine the total flavonoid content (TFC), the method of Dewanto et al. (2002) was used. Results were expressed as milligrams of quercetin equivalents per gram dry extract (mg QE/g DE). Total tannin content (TTC) content was estimated using Folin-Ciocalteu method after their adsorption onto hide polyvinylpolypyrrolidone powder (Aidi Wannes and Marzouk 2016). Results were expressed as milligrams of gallic acid equivalents per gram of dry extract (mg GA/g DE). Condensed tannin content (CTC) was calculated using the method described by Aidi Wannes and Marzouk (2016). Results were expressed as milligrams catechin equivalents per gram dry extract (mg CE/g DE).
