Genetics of Obesity: Etiologic Heterogeneity and Temporal Trends
Claude Bouchard in The Genetics of Obesity, 2020
The parent-child and sibling residual correlations as predicted from the model are displayed graphically in Fig. 2. Since parents have generally reached the asymptotic value oft, the predicted parent-child correlation primarily varies with the age of the child and increases as does t to about 0.3. For the sibling correlations, the expected correlation depends on the ages of both sibs; for simplicity, the correlation is shown here in reference to a newborn sib. As the age difference between the one sib and the newborn increases, the effect of p dominates and produces a drop in the predicted sibling correlation. That is, there remains the portion of the sibling correlation that is generated by virtue of the familial factors transmitted from parents to children, but there appears to be no additional sibling resemblance due to shared residual environmental factors when the sibs are over 20 years apart in age. As time progresses, any observed pair of sibs will always have a constant age difference, but in addition there is a predicted increase over time in sib-sib resemblance due to the effect of increasing t. When both members of the pair have reached adulthood (defined here as over 25 years of age), their age difference is no longer as critical in determining their correlation, and the effect of t is assumed to be constant in adulthood.
Contraception
Anne Stephenson, Martin Mueller, John Grabinar, Janice Rymer in 100 Cases in General Practice, 2017
This is a difficult situation. The GP has to decide whether it is probable that she has engaged in consensual sexual activity and make a judgment about how the mother's insistence on being present at the consultation has altered her responses. In the majority of cases, the situation will be harmless, with the mother simply being protective. However, there is a small chance that the mother does not leave because she is trying to conceal facts that would raise concerns about possible sexual abuse. Her presence has made it difficult to determine the consensual nature of the patient's and the neighbour's relationship and to verify that this is her only sexual partner. It is important that young people understand the consensual nature of sexual relationships as they are vulnerable to coercion, and peer-group pressure can play an important role in their behaviours. A large age difference between the patient and her sexual partner(s) would be worrisome and below the age of 14 years the authorities view sexual intercourse as child abuse and oblige practitioners to report such situations.
Coronary heart disease after the pandemic
William G. Rothstein in The Coronary Heart Disease Pandemic in the Twentieth Century, 2017
Age differences in ischemic heart disease mortality rates also decreased both within and among countries as the pandemic declined using the same three countries. In the United States in 1970 white men ages 65-74 had 17.0 more deaths per 1000 than white men ages 45-54. This age difference decreased to 6.0 more deaths in 2000. The comparable decrease in age differences for white women was from 9.0 more deaths in 1970 to 2.9 more deaths in 2000. In England and Wales in 1971 men ages 65-74 had 13.4 more deaths per 1000 than men ages 45-54, which decreased in 2001 to 6.6 more deaths. The age difference for women decreased from 5.1 more deaths in 1971 to 3.0 more deaths in 2001. In Canada in 1970 men ages 65- 69 had 13.1 more deaths per 1000 than men ages 45-49, which decreased to 4.2 more deaths in 1999. The same age difference for the two groups of women decreased from 6.0 more deaths in 1970 to 1.7 more deaths in 1999 for the older women (Tables 8.2, 11.1, and 11.2).

In conclusion, we showed that miR-223 is up-regulated and PARylation is reduced in pediatric patients with CD. The significant age difference between our study groups may mean a limitation to our results. The control group was recruited from patients with clinical indication for colonoscopy; no additional healthy children were included due to ethical consideration. On the other hand, Noren Hooten et al. did not find evidence for the change of miR-223 during aging [42]. However, Muiras et al. find an elevated PARP activation in centenarians compared to the controls. In this study, the age difference was 50–80 years, however, in our study, it was only 5–10 years. Moreover, they observed increasing PARP activity during aging, whereas we found decreased activation in the older diseased groups. Other limitation is the absence of siRNA model, however, Streppel et al. have previously shown the direct effect of miR-223 on PARP-1 expression [12]. However, we confirmed in vitro the opposite change of the miR-223 expression and PARP-1 activity. These data suggest that the hypofunctionality of PARP-1, through a deficient DNA repair, may play a potential role in the pathomechanism of CD.
Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Influences on Sexual Satisfaction in Young Male Couples: Analyses of Actor-Partner Interdependence Models

We used these individually-reported demographic data to compute four couple-level variables for analyses. First, we calculated age discordance by taking the absolute value of the age difference between partners. Second, couple-level relationship length was computed by calculating the mean of each individual’s response to the relationship length item. Third, HIV-positivity in the relationship was dichotomized into couples in which at least one member was HIV-positive (coded 1) and couples in which neither was HIV-positive (coded 0). Finally, couples were designated as sexual position incompatible if both members selected “top” or “versatile top,” or if both members selected “bottom” or “versatile bottom” (coded 1). All other position combinations were coded compatible (coded 0).
Boomer Matters: Responding to Emotional Health Needs in an Aging Society

Even with those participants who experienced disabilities that resulted in sharing many of the same social challenges that create barriers to inclusion associated with old age – for example, immobility, isolation, health challenges – a keen awareness of age difference remained. Popular, largely negative ideas about old age dominated participants’ evaluation of BSC as a social place that was comfortable, inviting, and/or attractive to them. In spite of this misapprehension though, most participants were able to bridge their initial sense of difference to find places for themselves in the program. For some, this was the discovery that there was a “hidden circle” of boomer-aged adults that was simply invisible at first – an “inside group of people who were … younger.” Others, with time, were able to “overcome” their initial response and see commonalities with those who were old, even though this “took time.”
