Boswellic acid from Boswellia serrata Roxb. ex Colebr. inhibited rat lens aldose reductase, rat kidney aldose reductase and human recombinant aldose reductase activities with IC50 values equal to 5, 6, and 3.9 μg/mL, respectively.162 In Wistar albino rats fed with galactose for 14 days, daily administration of boswellic acid at a dose of 10 mg/kg reduced lens aldose reductase catalyzed production of galactitol by 74%.162 Methanol extract of oleogum resin from another member of the genus Boswellia Roxb. ex Colebr. given orally to Wistar rats at a dose of 400 mg/kg/day for 30 days before subcutaneous administration of isoprenaline-lowered serum aspartate transaminase, lactate dehydrogenase, and creatinine by 30%, 45%, and 60%.215 The extract reduced lipid peroxidation in myocardium by about 60%.215 Besides, this treatment prevented myonecrosis and myocardial edema and lowered.215

The pods and nuts of the herb shikakai (Acacia concinna) are widely used in shampoos. The pods have neutral pH in aqueous suspension and are used to make mild detergent rich in saponins. Similarly, Sapindus trifoliatus (soapnuts) contains saponins that are used as a foaming agent that takes the place of soap in ayurvedic tradition (Jain et al. 2010b). Āmla (Emblica officinalis) with its rich content of vitamin C has importance in rejuvenation of both body and hair. As advised by Caraka, the regular intake of āmla can delay the aging process (Murari et al. 2013). Boswellic acid obtained from Boswellia serrata inhibits enzymes like 5-lipoxygenase, responsible for inflammation and skin damage (Preetha and Karthika 2009). The clear gel of Aloe vera has the ability to heal wounds, ulcers and burns by forming a coating over areas that are affected, and helps in healing. Besides providing protection against skin infections and reducing wrinkles, Aloe vera finds its place in shampoo that improves dry and brittle hair (Jain et al. 2010b).

The bark of Boswellia (family Burseraceae) having sweet, cooling, and tonic effect and contain boswellic acid resin as the main chemical constituent and it’s 13-form has anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activities. Commonly Boswellia is useful in fever, cough, asthma, urethrorrhea, diaphoresis, convulsion, chronic laryngitis, and jaundice and is analgesic, antihyperlipidemic, and anti-atherosclerotic (James et al., 1991). In both adults and children with RA experienced effective relief from the symptoms when treated with Boswellia, despite having responded poorly in the past to standard therapies such as (NSAIDs) (Kimmatkar et al., 2003). In an animal study, Boswellic acid show significantly reduced in the infiltration of leukocytes in the knee joint and in turn, significantly reduced inflammation (Kimmatkar et al., 2003). A clinical study was conducted to assess the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of Boswellia serrata (BS). BS extract was given to the 30 patients of arthritis, 15 each receiving active drug or placebo for 8 weeks founds decrease in knee pain, increase knee flexion, and a decrease in the frequency of swelling in the knee joint (Anthoni et al., 2003).

In recent years, Natural compounds have attracted worthy attention for their use in the prevention and treatment of various chronic diseases as they are devoid of major toxicities. Boswellic acid (BA) proved to be one such agent that has exhibited efficacy against various chronic diseases. BA is isolated from the gum resin of Boswellia serrata and Boswellia carteri (Roy et al.2019). Boswellia species are lipophilic extracts of the gum resin containing a broad variety of pentacyclic triterpenes termed Boswellic acids such as: β-boswellic acid, 3-acteyl β-boswellic acid, 11-keto-β-boswellic acid, and 3-acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid. BAs have been used to treat inflammatory and infectious diseases such as Crohn’s disease, endotoxin-induced hepatitis, ulcerative colitis, arthritis and cancer through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity (Moustafa et al.2016, Ebrahimpour et al.2017).

Other plant-based chemotherapeutics have shown promise in preclinical trials. Curcumin found in the turmeric plant (curcuma longa) has long been known to show some anti-tumorigenic properties. Curic et al. have shown strong growth arrest (G2/M phase arrest) of meningioma cells of the Ben-Men-1 cell line and 21 primary human meningioma cell cultures and under high concentrations (20, 50 µM) to be greatly apoptotic [43]. Boswellic acids derived from the Boswellia serrata tree (Indian olibanum), in particular Acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA), have shown utilizable anti-neoplastic and anti-inflammatory effects [44]. Glaser et al. studied that AKBA activity against malignant glioma and its anti-inflammatory effects [45]. Boswellic acids have shown activity against several tumors and so are prime candidates for anti-atypical meningioma research [46]. Park et al.’s trial of AKBA on primary meningioma cultures shows promise and warrants further clinical trials [44].

More than 200 constituents have been known in Boswellia Serrata resin (Camarda et al.2007b). It has been suggested that the strong anti-inflammatory properties of Olibanum can be attributed to the two main substances, boswellic acid and incensol acetate (Weber et al.2006, Moussaieff et al.2012b). Boswellic acid leads to inhibition of human leukocyte elastase and I kappa B kinase (IκB kinase, IKK) which is involved in the inflammatory response (Weber et al.2006). Also, incensol acetate is able to reduce inflammatory mediators, inhibition of expression of TNF-α, IL-1β and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) (Moussaieff et al.2012b). However, all of these mechanism(s) and the contribution of the components are need to be evaluated in the future.
