Astragalus membranaceus (Latin), ogi (Japanese), hwanggi (Korean), huang qi (Chinese), and membranous milk-vetch root (English), is one in all the essential “Qi tonifying” adaptogenic herbs present in the Chinese materia medica. It has been prescribed for hundreds of years for general weakness, chronic diseases, and to extend overall vitality. The class Astragalus has more than 2000 species around the world and is often called as milk-vetch root. The main constituent of A. membranaceus includes polysaccharides, saponins, flavonoids, amino acids, and trace elements. Currently, much of the pharmacological research on Astragalus is focused on its immune-stimulating polysaccharides and other active ingredients useful in treating immune deficiency conditions (Alternative Medicine Review, 2003; Ma et al., 2002)

Astragalus membranaceus is the species of Astragalus used in traditional Chinese medicine. It is alternatively known as A. propinquus or A. mongholicus. As is typical in the Chinese tradition, Astragalus membranaceus has generally been used as part of combinations of herbs for treatment of various illness. It has most commonly found use in treatments of what are seen as in TCM as spleen and lung deficiencies contributing to diarrhea, fatigue, poor appetite, sweating, colds, shortness of breath, and various wasting disorders. However, given the role thought to be played by the spleen meridian in symptoms of fatigue and despondency, Astragalus membranaceus has also been part of what might be considered antidepressant treatments, such as Gui Pi Wan, or Restore the Spleen Pills, and Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan, or Pill to Strengthen the Center and Boost Qi.1

Traditional Chinese medicine has been widely used in clinic, especially in China. Except for cancer patients, some people received herbal treatments for anticancer therapy also increase the possibility of drug-drug interactions (Qi et al. 2015; Wang et al. 2020). Astragalus membranaeus (Fisch.) Bge. (Fabaceae) is a Chinese traditional medicinal plant with various pharmacological functions and has been used in the clinical treatment of breast cancer (Fu et al. 2014; Dong et al. 2022). As one of the most active ingredients of astragalus, astragaloside IV has been reported to suppress metastasis and tumour progression and enhanced the chemosensitivity of breast cancer (Jiang et al. 2017; Zheng et al. 2019; Hu et al. 2021). It is prescribed to breast cancer patients who received therapy of abemaciclib and influenced the pharmacokinetics and pharmacology of abemaciclib.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Astragalus has been widely used for more than 2000 years and exhibits various physiological and pharmacological effects. Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) (29) (Table 3) is the most important active ingredient in Astragalus, and has various pharmacological activities such as anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant [73]. Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a worldwide public health problem that seriously threatens human health. Although the clinical treatment of CHF is diverse, the mortality and morbidity of HF remain high. Liu et al. [74] showed that AS-IV suppress oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage, inhibited ventricular remodeling, and improved cardiac function by reducing the expression of SENP1 in mice with heart failure. The discovery of this mechanism provides a new theoretical basis and clinical reference for the treatment of heart failure.

Past research has revealed that the abundance of natural ingredients in food has health benefits for organisms. Examples include the hydroxytyrosol found in olives, resveratrol found in nuts and red wine, and dioscin found in yams, which have been shown to have antioxidant, antithrombotic, and anti-inflammatory properties (Kris-Etherton et al. 2002; Dai and Mumper 2010; Yang et al. 2017). Some herbs such as Astragalus (Theaceae), a precious medicinal dietary material rich in Astragalus polysaccharide, have the effect of biphasic regulation of blood glucose, and can effectively inhibit hyperglycaemia and complications in diabetic animal models (Li et al. 2004). Tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world, as well as a kind of prescription. White tea, green tea, black tea, and puerh tea are the principal types of tea. They are all derived from the leaves of the tea plant [Camellia sinensis (L) O.Ktze. (Theaceae)] and are classified depending on the degree of oxidation of polyphenol.
