Managing staff absenteeism
Raj Rattan, Kevin Lewis, Raj Rattan in Making Sense of Dental Practice Management, 2017
A different approach to the problem is to introduce an incentive payment scheme. The employee receives a bonus payment each quarter if he/she maintains a 100 per cent attendance record. The disadvantage of the scheme is that it penalizes those members of the dental team who may be absent for perfectly acceptable reasons and who may feel disadvantaged by such a scheme. A variation of this scheme is to start each year by allocating a number of points to each employee. The points total reduces as absences occur and a sliding scale of bonus payments determines the end of year bonus, depending on the employee’s record. The scale must be agreed with the staff at the beginning so that everyone knows and understands the system. It is a good idea to have a discretionary allowance in genuine cases of absence through illness so as not to penalize these occasional absences.
Introduction
Jim Ford, Gordon Parker, Fiona Ford, Diana Kloss, Simon Pickvance, Philip Sawney, Dame Carol Black in Rehabilitation for Work Matters, 2018
Sickness absence is a specific form of illness behaviour, in which a person absents him- or herself from a work commitment or a number of other commitments, for a fixed period of time, on the grounds of illness which may be objective or which may be largely self-perceived. Usually a form of attestation will be offered (or sought by the employers), such as a sickness certificate signed by a GP after a particular number of days. In many cases, the outcome of the consultation which results in the issuing of a sick note will be determined by the patient, as most GPs regard their role as an advocate, and they feel that they have to support their patient. In any case, the types of illness which may be presented to the GP, namely short-term conditions such as diarrhoea, lethargy and stress, are difficult to challenge.
Under Erasure: William Kentridge, Derrida, and Post-Apartheid South Africa

In Kentridge, the traces are twofold. They are physical traces, corporeal marks on a page, traces of the drawing effaced beforehand, but at the same time, these are traces in the philosophical sense. They come to mark not only the deferral in time inherent to any type of representation, including of course film, but also to signify the absence present within each frame. That is, they signal not only the absence of the previous sketch or drawing but the absence inherent to filmic representation, that allows for any presence to be perceived at all. In stop motion animation, this point is clearer still. If the previous drawing were still present in the now current drawing, no movement would be perceived whatsoever. Absence is a necessity of presence. Kentridge alludes to this fact when he opts to erase the drawing, while retaining the erasure and rendering it visible.
Managing absence and dropout in vocational rehabilitation – a mixed-methods analysis of practices and perspectives among vocational rehabilitation companies in Norway

Category 2 in Table 1 (“highly important but not recurrent”) reveals several thematic categories. We consider them as important, because they advance our knowledge of dilemmas associated with absence management in relation to vocational rehabilitation programs. Some of the managers expressed a concern that the line between valid and nonvalid absence often involve difficult judgments (challenges with medical documentation and with discriminating valid from nonvalid absence). This is complicated by the fact that some participants provide no notification of absence at all, or they fail to provide the necessary medical documentation. In addition, uncertainty and various practices are identified, in terms of what kind of documentation that should be required for absence in different situations.
Relationships between presenteeism and work-related musculoskeletal disorders among physical therapists in the Republic of Korea

Presenteeism occurs when an employee is present at work and fulfills his/her obligations despite an illness or injury [10–14]. Presenteeism is associated with a decrease in productivity [15–18]. Absenteeism is the total absence from the workplace because of illness or injury [19]. Generally, workers with unhealthy condition had decreased productivity and induced absenteeism and presenteeism [19]. However, the costs of lost productivity from presenteeism have been demonstrated to be 1.9–5.1 times greater than the costs of lost productivity from absenteeism [15]. Specifically, one study showed a 77% loss of productivity from presenteeism as compared to 23% lost productivity from absenteeism [20]. Presenteeism is usually measured with the Stanford presenteeism scale (SPS) that was developed to assess both presenteeism, meaning indirectly productivity loss, and absenteeism, meaning directly productivity, from specific unhealthy conditions [10,14,18,21].
