Nutritional and Alternative Medicine
Aruna Bakhru in Nutrition and Integrative Medicine, 2018
Federal law imposes limitations on in-office dispensing in a variety of circumstances.59 Controlled substances under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) are regulated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), which enforces detailed regulations concerning the prescription, storage, manipulation, record-keeping, and administration of controlled substances. Controlled substances can only be prescribed by practitioners holding a DEA registration. Practitioners require DEA registrations to prescribe any scheduled hormones (e.g., testosterone, HCG, GH, etc.). In certain states, naturopathic doctors are permitted to prescribe Schedule III-V controlled substances when operating under the supervision of a licensed Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic medicine. In states like California, an N.D. can affiliate with a licensed M.D. through a supervision agreement.60

Nutritional Disorders/Alternative Medicine
Walter F. Stanaszek, Mary J. Stanaszek, Robert J. Holt, Steven Strauss in Understanding Medical Terms, 2020
Nutrition has long been an important part of traditional medical practice, but in more recent years it has taken on a new image as something that can provide healing beyond the concepts of deficiency and excess. Nutritional supplements are now part of the entire alternative medical market, an arena of which pharmacists and other health practitioners should be aware. Traditional medicine in western cultures includes primarily allopathic medicine, osteopathic medicine (as it is practiced today), their related technologies, and pharmaceuticals. Alternative medicine is the term frequently applied to a variety of increasingly common approaches to the management of mental and physical disorders that do not always follow the standard scientific method. The distinguishing difference between traditional and alternative medicine seems to be that most of the alternative approaches are based on a specific theory of healing or a philosophy of health rather than arising from a more strictly scientific, empiric approach. In short, each method has an underlying philosophy or theory that often relies of theoretical "forces" and "balances" rather than on biochemistry and physiology.

The setting for this quality improvement project included four pediatric primary care offices in a medium-sized regional health system in rural, southern Ohio. The participants are nine PCPs treating adolescent patients, ages 12–18. The practice settings for this project were four rural pediatric primary care offices within a regional Health System. The pediatric primary care offices included one Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) and eight Pediatricians. The physicians consisted of three Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and five Doctors of Allopathic Medicine (MD). All primary care providers (PCP) are board certified. All providers (n = 9) voluntarily participated in the education session and completed the questionnaires. There was a total of approximately n = 505 patient visits over this project period.

We created and conducted a 16-item cross-sectional online survey on the Qualtrics platform with both structured and open-ended questions regarding common practices and attitudes towards follow-up care after prescription of a contraceptive. Current providers in the departments of Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics and OBGYN at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals (TJUH), an urban academic medical centre in Philadelphia, PA, USA, were surveyed. Providers included Medical Doctors (MD), Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Physician Assistants (PA), Nurse Practitioners (NP) and Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNM). Eligible providers were identified from faculty and resident lists and contacted via email with a survey invitation in December 2020. Two weeks following the initial invitation, a reminder email was sent. The survey was completed anonymously, and results were tabulated in a secure online database. This study was approved as exempt by the IRB.

This work informed a subsequent thematic conference in the fall of 2019, hosted by the AMA in conjunction with A.T. Still University's School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona. Consortium members applied a systems-thinking approach to enhance institutional support of learner and faculty well-being. Obstacles to creating a well culture were explored — such as stigma, mixed messaging, and expecting individual resilience rather than re-designing workflows to sustain wellness. Students lead a section of the conference agenda and shared that their greatest stressors relate to institutional systems issues in educational programming, such as competing curricular demands among courses, lack of clarity regarding expectations, and poor communication of scheduling and changes in programming. Of course, external drivers such as licensing exams and the residency selection process were cited by students as well, and the AMA has pursued advocacy efforts regarding such national structures that impact well-being (InCUS 2019).
