Role of Nutraceuticals in Prevention of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver
Megh R. Goyal, Durgesh Nandini Chauhan in Plant- and Marine-Based Phytochemicals for Human Health, 2018
Syringic acid, which is O-methylated trihydroxybenzoic acid, is present in the açaí palm (Euterpe oleracea) and in Ardisia elliptica, and grapes. Oral administration of syringic acid demonstrated significant hepa- toprotective effect in rats, similar to silymarin, represented by significant improvement in the activity of alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase. Syringic acid possesses antihyperlipidemic activity by reducing total cholesterol (T. Ch), TGs, VLDL-ch, and LDL-ch as well as producing significant increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. It significantly reduced TGs, T. Ch in liver and kidney.68 Therefore, the syringic acid may possess protective effect toward fatty liver.
Food as medicine

These are examples those largely taken from the two lists mentioned in the opening paragraph. A number of berries and other fruits feature in many superfood lists including acai berries, apples, Goji berries, prunes (dried plums), strawberries, kiwi, bananas, pineapples, cherries, blackberries, grapes, blueberries, cranberries, oranges and mangoes. As discussed at the start of the chapter, a healthy recommended diet should contain at least five varied daily 80 g portions of fruits and vegetables. Any or all of these foods could usefully make up part of that regular 5-a-day. Fruits are important sources of several essential nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin B6, folate, potassium and beta-carotene (vitamin A). They also contain dietary fibre and are low in calories. There are claims that many of them contain high levels of powerful antioxidants as follows: Quercetin a flavonoid or polyphenol found in apples and berries. Anthocyanins and other flavonoids in acai berries, cherries and blackberries Resveratrol a natural phenol found in grapes (also found in small amounts in red wines). Beta-carotene (vitamin A) and other carotenoids like lycopene and lutein in mangos, cantaloupe melon, grapefruit, oranges, apricots, watermelon and tomatoes.

The analysis of the number of ACF on the colorectal mucosa showed that rats supplemented with juçara fruit pulp presented lower numbers of ACF in comparison to non-supplemented rats. Choi et al. (17), in an experimental rat model of CRC, supplemented the feed of animals with acai berries. The authors found reduction in tumourigenesis as well as a decrease and stabilization of the growth of neoplastic cells, and they attributed these results to the direct action of supplementation with phenolic compounds presents in açai. This suggests that the consumption of products derived from the juçara fruit leads to a reduction in pre-neoplastic lesions, possibly due to the presence of antioxidant substances.
